In the Delsetan Carpet, the butterfly motif emerges from the symmetrical arrangement of arabesque branches and blossoms. Its red wings spread across a navy-blue ground, while delicate vegetal ornaments fill their interiors. This manner of ornamentation, inspired by the Safavid school, is completed by a richly floral border and warm colours.
The contrast between the dark ground and the red motifs emphasises the butterfly’s outstretched wings, while the sheen of silk alters the nuances of colour when viewed from different angles.
Alongside this work, three other silk Delsetan carpets have been woven, comprising two green versions and one red, as well as two woollen Delroba carpets in blue and red. The choice of these two closely related names reflects the different visual qualities of wool and silk; each fibre, through its own distinctive characteristics, lends charm and allure to the design shared by these carpets.
