Bid Majnoon Carpet

In Persian, Bid Majnoon means weeping willow; the name refers to the tree at the centre of the carpet, which, together with the two symbolic birds, evokes the love story of Layli and Majnun. The Bid Majnoon Carpet is a pictorial interpretation of the story of Layli and Majnun through the language of carpet weaving. The two birds beside the weeping willow at the centre of the work complete this narrative, while the beige ground, together with delicate blossoms and branches, lends the composition a calm and dignified character.

درباره‌ی Bid Majnoon Carpet

In the Bid Majnoon Carpet, the story of Layli and Majnun is expressed through the language of motifs and colour. The two birds in the design symbolise Layli and Majnun, while the weeping willow at the centre of the carpet reinforces this meaning. The branches, blossoms and gentle movement of the vegetal motifs take the composition beyond mere ornamentation, bringing it closer to a pictorial narrative.
The beige ground lends greater tranquillity to the design, allowing the details of the motifs and the birds to be seen more clearly. Three other versions of this design have also been woven within the Bordbar Collection: a woollen Bid Majnoon with a red ground, a silk Shekufeh with a red ground, and a silk Polonaise Shekufeh in a copper tone. The present version is woven from wool and cotton, originates from Heriz, and measures 165 × 125 cm.
