Molouk Carpet

Molouk is the name of the weaver after whom this carpet design is named, preserving the artist’s identity and craftsmanship alongside the work. In this version of the Molouk Carpet, the ground is woven from naturally coloured sheep’s wool, without dyeing. The natural tones of the fibres, together with large khata’i blossoms, angular motifs and a navy-blue border, lend this reinterpretation of Sultanabad and Heriz designs an authentic and distinctive character.

درباره‌ی Molouk Carpet

What distinguishes this version of the Molouk Carpet is the use of naturally coloured, undyed sheep’s wool for its ground. The natural colour of the fibres, without the need for dyeing, creates a carefully balanced composition alongside the large khata’i floral motifs and angular branches. The navy-blue border, adorned with red and light-coloured blossoms, contrasts with the natural ground and brings greater clarity to the motifs.
The design of this carpet draws inspiration from the ornamental traditions of the Sultanabad and Heriz schools, and its name was chosen in honour of Molouk, the weaver of the design. The use of naturally coloured wool in this version allows the inherent beauty of the fibres to be appreciated alongside the refinement of the design.
This design has also been woven in five other versions: three Molouk carpets in deep red, brown and blue; a blue-ground Morvaridbaf Molouk; and the Raha Carpet, predominantly green in colour. The present version is woven from wool and cotton, originates from Heriz, and measures 315 × 212 cm.
