Molouk Carpet

Molouk is the name of the weaver after whom this design is named, preserving the artist’s identity alongside the work. The Molouk Carpet, with its blue ground and large khata’i blossoms, draws inspiration from the Sultanabad and Heriz schools. Shades of lacquer red, cream and brown among the angular branches, together with the dark and richly patterned border, create a composition that is both lively and well balanced.

درباره‌ی Molouk Carpet

In this version of the Molouk Carpet, the blue ground provides an ideal setting for the display of large khata’i blossoms and angular branches. The vegetal motifs extend across the field in a clearly defined and symmetrical arrangement, while shades of lacquer red, cream and brown bring the blossoms into sharper relief against the blue ground. A dark border with repeated floral motifs completes the composition of the carpet.
The design of this work is influenced by the ornamental traditions of Sultanabad and Heriz carpets, and its name is taken from Molouk, the weaver of the design.
In addition to this carpet, five other versions of the design have also been woven: three Molouk carpets with lacquer-red, brown and naturally coloured undyed wool grounds; a blue-ground Morvaridbaf Molouk; and the Raha Carpet with a predominantly green colour. This piece is woven from wool and cotton, originates from Heriz, and measures 255 × 170 cm.
