Molouk Carpet

Molouk is the name of the weaver after whom this design is named, preserving the artist’s identity and craftsmanship across its various woven versions. The Molouk Carpet, with its lacquer-red ground and large khata’i blossoms, is a reinterpretation of motifs from the Sultanabad and Heriz schools. The angular lines of the vegetal motifs, together with shades of blue and cream and a light-coloured border, give the design a lively sense of movement. The name Molouk derives from the weaver of the piece.

درباره‌ی Molouk Carpet

In this version of the Molouk Carpet, the deep lacquer-red ground is covered with large blossoms and angular khata’i branches. The design draws inspiration from the ornamental traditions of the Sultanabad and Heriz schools, maintaining symmetry on either side of the central axis despite the density of its motifs. Touches of blue and cream against the red ground bring greater definition to the principal blossoms, while a light-coloured border encloses the richly patterned field.

The name Molouk derives from the name of the weaver of this design. Five other versions of the same pattern have also been woven within the Bordbar Collection: three Molouk carpets with brown, blue and naturally coloured, undyed wool grounds; a blue-ground Morvaridbaf Molouk; and the Raha Carpet, predominantly green in colour. The variations in colour and weaving technique across this collection reveal different expressions of a shared design.

This carpet is woven from wool and cotton, originates from Heriz, and measures 378 × 253 cm.
