Nouri Carpet

In Persian, Nouri means luminous, radiant or pertaining to light; the name was chosen because the gradual expansion of motif and colour from the medallion’s centre suggests the emission of light from within it. In the Nouri Carpet, a medallion inspired by the Tabriz school is set against a red ground and a plain field. The royal arrangement of the design and the spread of lighter colours from the centre of the medallion towards its surroundings create the sensation of light radiating outward, which is why the carpet is named Nouri.

درباره‌ی Nouri Carpet

In the Nouri Carpet, the central medallion has been designed with inspiration from the ornamental language of the Tabriz school and placed, in a royal composition, upon a plain red ground. A distinguishing feature of this design is the relationship between the open field and the density and delicacy of the medallion’s motifs. Shades of cream, grey-blue and brown are layered within the medallion, guiding the eye outward from the centre. This gradual expansion of motif and colour suggests the radiance of light emanating from within the medallion to its surroundings, which is the reason for the name Nouri.

The four corner spandrels, with their floral motifs and soft colours, are set against the uniform red of the ground. A broad border with khata’i ornaments and the measured circulation of blossoms and leaves encloses the central composition and adds to the dignity of the design. The simplicity of the carpet’s field allows the medallion, with all its detail and proportion, to retain its principal place within the composition.

This piece is woven from wool and cotton, originates from Heriz, and measures 315 × 260 cm. The carefully balanced palette and the preservation of open space around the medallion are among the notable features of this carpet’s design.
